The reading field has come to expect that the reading of children who lag behind during the first few grades can be significantly improved with good instruction. Similar confidence in treating the reading difficulties of adolescents has not been common. Indeed, the general consensus has been that even when treated, the poor reading of adolescents does not improve appreciably.

The authors take a different view. In this book, they present a remedial program for adolescents who are behind in reading as much as five to six grade levels. With this program, students make impressive gains in reading of about two years for every year of instruction; thus, it is possible to bring most of them up to grade level. The program, based on research and practice in reading and reading disabilities, has great simplicity, and does not require elaborate and expensive teacher training.

Developed at Boys Town Reading Center and replicated in affiliated public schools, the program has great promise for adolescents who do not read well enough to continue their education or for the requirements of today's workplace.
