Product Description
You relive the fun of a special event - a trip to the zoo, their birthday, a visit to Grandmother's house, or a family holiday - by recording it in their own words and pictures in these books.
The books provide sentence starters that children finish with words describing their personal experiences. The young authors then paste photos or draw pictures to illustrate their stories. The books help kids improve their language skills as well as work on skills such as measuring, comparing, counting, understanding family relationships, expressing emotions, and learning family traditions. After the books are completed, children return to them again and again to read about their own adventures!
My Trip to the Zoo, I Like Birthdays, Visiting My Grandmother, and I Like Holidays are designed for all beginning readers and writers, including English language learners and students identified for Title I or special education programs. Parents and grandparents share an enjoyable activity with children and create a keepsake they will cherish long after the child's reading progresses beyond the level of the book. Teachers can use the books to motivate students to practice their vocabulary and reading skills.
K.A. BYE has taught reading to grades K-12 and college-level students. She holds a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership with an emphasis in curriculum and instruction. Kathy and her husband, Bob, together have four children and seven grandchildren.
Earl Ridgell is an educator and illustrator who lives in Baltimore, Maryland.
Reviews:
"In order to teach a child, you have to enter their view of the world...What a great way to do this! K.A. Bye's interactive books help to bridge the literacy gap. This series not only helps young readers improve their literacy skills, it allows the reader to own the story and 'be the book.' Better yet, the series fosters positive relationship building between adult and child. A must-have for all parents, caregivers and early elementary school teachers alike."
~Julia Cook, M.S., Award Winning Children's Author/Presenter
“Ideal for playtime, rainy day, and family night activities, the entire series is enthusiastically recommended to the attention of grandparents, teachers, and care-givers too!!
~Children’s Bookwatch, September 2009 ~Diane C. Donovan, Editor
"A marvelous idea, executed in superb fashion...Being able to personalize the book, with drawings or writing makes the books a keepsake and a real source of pride."
~The National Parenting Center, August 2008
"This unique approach to interacting with children is fun and compelling, meaningful and authentic for kids. The stories captured in these books transcend the giving of an ordinary gift. They share time, attention, and love - all gifts that will last."
~Donna Flood, Ph.D., Education
"These books actively engage children in the reading process. Because the focus is on their experiences, children are very motivated and can relate in a meaningful way to text. These books are a major contribution to reading."
~Rachel Billmeyer, Ph.D., author of Literacy and Learning Trilogy
