Today’s School Counselors: Not the Guidance Counselors of Yesterday

Posted by Jeff Tucker, Ph.D., Boys Town Press Author and National Certified School Counselor on Feb 2nd 2024

When you think of school counselors, what’s the first thing that comes to mind?

If you’re anything like me, what comes to mind is getting your classes scheduled and receiving pamphlets about countless colleges and universities. The outdated term “guidance counselor” might even spring to mind. Those days are long gone.

Who are today’s school counselors?

Today’s school counselors are masters-level professionals who have been extensively trained to provide a variety of services within schools. They abide by a code of ethics and often belong to professional school counseling organizations, such as the American School Counselor Association. (I’ve been a proud member for a decade!)

What do today’s school counselors do?

Today’s school counselors develop and implement comprehensive school counseling programs according to national standards to enhance academic achievement, career planning, and social/emotional development. They exhibit professional foundation skills, such as using data as a catalyst for sparking systemic change. They provide direct and indirect services to students, such as using evidence-based approaches for short-term counseling in small groups and individual settings and making referrals to community resources. They also engage in planning and assessment, such as identifying gaps in student achievement, opportunities, and access to resources. Short answer: A lot!

What does this mean for students?

It means there is a kind and trustworthy person at your child’s school who is willing to work with them on issues ranging from managing anger to planning for life after high school. If your child is experiencing a concern that is beyond the scope of what can be addressed in a school setting, the school counselor can connect you with local services that can help. School counselors are also well-equipped to provide services in the event of a crisis and can work with children who have experienced trauma.

Where are today’s school counselors?

This one might seem easy. C’mon Jeff, school counselors are in schools, aren't they? Of course, but I want to emphasize that today’s school counselors are not only present in secondary schools but also in elementary schools. Many children have access to school counselors’ services from their very first day of school until the day they toss that mortarboard to the sky!

Why are school counselors necessary?

It goes back to the old adage, “It takes a village.” Teachers, administrators, school counselors, librarians, cafeteria workers, custodians, etc., are all there to ensure your child has a safe and supportive environment in which they can succeed, and they all serve in a distinct role to do just that. All children deserve a safe person they can talk to at school. For many, that person is the school counselor. School counselors go into the profession because they care about young people, mental health, and education. Their passion lies in playing a supportive role in the life of your child. I promise they’re not in it for the paycheck!

As we celebrate National School Counseling Week, I want to personally thank all school counselors for their commitment and dedication to supporting and enriching the lives of our young people.
